Events

In British India, the District Public Relations Office was established in 1924 under the Public Health Division to raise awareness about health and sanitation. Under the then Information Department, the activities of this department started in the Writers' Building in Calcutta under the name of Publicity Department. In 1948, under the Ministry of Information and Radio, the Directorate of Public Relations was formed with field publicity and news and film branches.In 1987, the scope of work was extended to create a District Public Relations Officer in each district and a Subdivisional Public Relations Officer in each subdivision. The Department of Mass Communication was formed in 1972 by uniting the Bangladesh Parishad, BNR and the women's wing with the aim of motivating and involving the people in development activities by making them aware at the grassroots level of post-independence Bangladesh.The activities of the Department of Mass Communication are implemented in all regions of the country through 64 District Information Offices and 04 Upazila Information Offices.

 

Since its inception, the District and Upazila Information Offices have been organizing various meetings, seminars, discussion meetings, concerts and movies to engage the people with the policies and development programs adopted by the government. At one time Bioscope was known as a popular medium in rural areas. This department used to organize this bioscope at that time and through it people used to provide information about birth control and sanitation. Added to this program are various activities of the government including inspection and supervision of Union Information and Service Center, plays, workshops, cultural programs, press meetings, children's fairs, yard meetings, publicity, distribution of booklets. Prominent personalities in the world of literature, journalism and music such as Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia, poet Jasim Uddin, artist Abbas Uddin, Abdul Alim, Sohrab Hossain, Abdul Latif, Bedar Uddin and others have worked in this department at different times.
